What Jacob Looked Like

Jacob bought land tracts from Phialdelphia Quaker merchant Henry Drinker. In Henry’s correspondence with a lawyer in Maryland, useful for collecting payments from the Brumbaughs, Henry had occasion to describe Jacob Brumbaugh using these words: he is “a bearded German.” This is the only contemporary description of Jacob Brumbaugh, possibly from Henry’s first-hand meeting, but more likely as described to Henry by his real estate agent in Bedford County. German Baptist Brethren adult males (like Mennonite adult males) were required as a religious duty not to shave their facial hair. This description of Jacob by Henry endeared Henry to me as there are no other contemporary descriptions of how Jacob looked.
